My name is Genevieve. I’m South African and live in Tāmaki Makaurau with my kiwi-husband and 5-year-old son.

Since I graduated from the University of Cape Town (2005) with a Masters in African Studies and Public Culture, I’ve always had a keen interest in media, specifically print. As a geriatric millennial, those born between 1980 and 1985, whose lives saw the intersection of analouge and digital, it was a natural progression to develop a keen interest in social media as a means for storytelling and to create community.

My first job after uni was in PR and Marketing where I was an account manager working with a host of lifestyle brands. After two years I was drawn to the other side of the media machine, namely editorial production. And so began my tenure as a features writer and editorial creative, bringing to life stories of South Africa’s most beautiful and interesting homes, as well as design, art, and architecture discourse and the people and personalities shaping these industries.

After taking a hiatus when I became a mother, I cut my teeth with digital content creation when I launched my online platform The New Normal on Instagram as a means to share my interest in maternal health. Since and after qualifying as a postpartum doula and coach, it’s became a huge passion project in my first few years of motherhood; coaching mothers in and educating on all aspects of maternal health and parenting.

After moving to Aotearoa in 2020 I started to explore other opportunites and in 2021 I was contracted as a digital and social media consultant for a local New Zealand family business, Comfi. Since 2023 I’ve been employed full time for UNICEF Aotearoa as their social media manager and content creator. Telling the stories of impact as well as the plight of children and their families facing some of the most unbelievable circumstances has been a priviledge and role I don’t take for granted. It has been a highlight of my career to date.

I have a love for the arts, culture, politics, and how they intersect. Since becoming a mother and working in the NGO-space, I’ve also developed a keen interest in issues affecting women, children and other marginalized groups.

One of the most valuable skills I gained in my academic career was that of critical thinking. This together with my love of storytelling, my acumen in editorial and online content creation, has set me on an interesting path and I’m excited to see where it will take me next.
